Important Web Sites about HIV/AIDS

There are thousands upon thousands of web sites about HIV/AIDS.  Of course, many focus on providing care and treatment particularly for Gay men.  Others are very clearly pro-condom in their approach to prevention.  Here are a few sites that the Reach 4 Life staff finds helpful.

www.unaids.org - Click on the 2004 Report on the Global Aids Epidemic at the bottom of the page.  You will get a ton of the latest information on the global picture, statistics and descriptions that will make you look like an expert.

www.avert.org - Here you will find great stats.  But it is a secular site that does not promote abstinence only as the one way to be sure for avoiding HIV infection.  It is good for research but not recommended to your youth.

www.statehealthfacts.org - Lots and lots of statistics.  Click on HIV/AIDS and explore.

www.cdc.gov/HIV - The CDC has a lot of information about HIV/AIDS in the USA.  Hunting for statistics can be a little confusing.  For instance, we found one report through this site that would place new HIV transmission through heterosexual contact around 12 %.  Another report indicates it is over 34 %.  In order to be safe, Reach 4 Life has chosen to take the position that over 11 % of all new HIV transmission is through heterosexual contact.  That’s a very conservative position.  If the 34 % figure is at all close to being accurate our youth can be at very high risk.  Explore this site and work at understanding all the statistics.
